1. That I love my
wife as I love myself—resisting the natural temptation to be selfish—and that
my wife respects me and the authority God has given me over her and our family (Ephesians 5:33).
2. That my wife
submits to me in everything as to the Lord, and that what I ask of her is what
Christ would want me to ask of her (Ephesians 5:22-24).
3. That I love my
wife as Christ loves the church: in a
sacrificial, purifying, and caring, protective manner (Ephesians 5:25-32).
4. That I not become
harsh or embittered against my wife (Colossians 3:19)—and that my wife is careful not to tempt me to be
so.
5. That my wife
demonstrates purity, reverence, and a gentle and quiet spirit in her life, not
a fearful or negative attitude (1 Peter 3:1-6).
6. That I be a
considerate and chivalrous partner in life with my wife, dwelling with her in
such an understanding way that I give no reason for my prayers to be hindered (1 Peter 3:7).
7. That my wife and
I devote ourselves to satisfying one another physically, emotionally, socially,
and mentally with great joy and enthusiasm for life (1 Corinthians 7:3-5; Proverbs 5:15-19).
